What do you consider the best thing about your school? Why?I really like the engineering department. Specifically the structural engineering department. It’s a small department and the students all know each other pretty well. Generally on campus you don’t feel like you’re part of a family, but in this department, you do. The professors are generally nice and helpful and there is always a Teaching Assistant or professor available to help students who don’t understand the material.,What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school? The thing I brag about most is how many projects we do as engineers. I am always excited to tell my friends about the last project, such as designing and building an automated crane. Especially in my last two years at school, we did a lot of cool projects that my friends were always astonished and intrigued by. I also brag about the high tech programs that we get to use to design all of the projects we work on.

What do you consider the best thing about your school? Why?One of the greatest things about UCSD is probably Geisel Library. It has a very unique shape and is probably one of the eye-catching pieces of architecture on campus. It has no third floor, and right next to it is the infamous “snake path” that leads from Geisel Library to Warren College.  Its highest floors are also infamous for being extremely quiet areas, so quiet that you could possibly be glared at very angrily by graduate students trying to study. It will also one day be your best friend; the best place to gather research for your papers.,What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?The worst thing about my school is probably the way classes are structured around TAs. It’s not that TAs are bad, but rather that it would be more beneficial to learn with a professor. It’s also much easier to get to know a professor and be able to get a recommendation letter that way. Because TAs are the ones who do all the grading, however, the student ends up getting to know the TA rather than the professor; many classes end without the student getting to know the professor at all.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?The worst thing about UCSD is a lack of guidence on professional development.  I do not think I ever had a professor talk to me about obtaining and internship or research position which I now realize is very important. The counselors do not offer much guidance in this issue either.,Describe your classmates in one sentence. My classmates were quite and focused on their studies.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?The tuition has increased by 40% since I graduated in 2009. Though it’s reputation is highly regarded, it is still pretty pricey for a public university. Also, due to state budget cuts a lot of our campus resources (6 libraries, professor office hours, small class sizes) have been tremendously affected.
Parking is horrible, student parking spots are continually decreasing, yet parking permit prices increase every year!
Also, a lot of students complain that the social scene is lacking. However, I had plenty of social events to attend- you have to find the fun, it won’t come to you.,What kind of person should attend this school? The courses here are very challenging and academically rigorous. The professors are experts in their field and the students who attend are all from the top 10% of their high school graduating class. Needless to say, the competition can be very stressful for some and it makes it that much more difficult to attain that elusive “A”.
However, there are SO many opportunities for research and internships through campus.
